The 10 best iPhone apps with iOS 8 Notification Center widgets

Home screen widget support probably isn’t anywhere near the top of most iPhone and iPad users’ wish lists in terms of missing iOS features, but a vocal minority has been begging for widget functionality ever since Android was first released. As opposed to static icons that are merely shortcuts to apps, home screen widgets offer a variety of additional functionality, namely access to zero-touch information that is updated automatically without any effort needed on the user’s part.
While home screen widgets still haven’t been added to Apple’s mobile platform in iOS 8, the latest version of Apple’s iPhone and iPad OS does finally add widget support to the Today view in Apple’s Notification Center.

The most surprisingly gorgeous smartphone we’ve seen is now on sale in the U.S.

The surprisingly sleek and gorgeous Sharp Aquos Crystal is now available for purchase on Boost Mobile, and Sprint Prepaid at Best Buy retail stores. Its screen will make you squint to see the edges, as it has what is definitely one of the thinnest bezels of any phone on the market.
Announced this past August, the Sharp Aquos Crystal will be available for a comparatively cheap $149.99 from Sprint’s Boost Mobile brand and Sprint Prepaid through Best Buy. Getting the new smartphone at Sprint will take a bit longer, however. You’ll have to wait until Friday, October 17th, but you can get it for $0 down and pay it off at $10 per month over the next 24 months.
sharp-acquos-crystal-1
The specs of the new Sharp Aquos Crystal include a 5-inch 720p display, a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor with 1.5GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage. It runs on Android’s 4.4.2 KitKat, has an 8-megapixel camera on the back and a 1.2-megapixel camera on the front, as well as a 2,040 mAh battery.
Sure, the Sharp Aquos Crystal doesn’t have the showstopping specs of other smartphones on the market, but for the price and look of the phone, it doesn’t have to. You can buy the phone now through Boost Mobile, and Sprint Prepaid (Best Buy).
If you want to wait to get it on a Sprint postpaid plan, you can pick it up starting October 17th.

Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus camera put to the ultimate test against a $3,400 DSLR

There’s been a great deal of talk recently about the advantages and disadvantages of using a smartphone as a primary camera. Plenty of professional photographers have decided to make the switch over the past few years as smartphone cameras have begun to surpass some of the more affordable point-and-shoot devices on the market, but can a smartphone even began to compare with an expensive DSLR?
That’s exactly what Lee Hutchinson at Ars Technica decided to find out by pitting the iPhone 6 Plus against the $3,400 Canon EOS 5D Mark III.
DON’T MISS: Pro photographer pens massive in-depth iPhone 6 Plus camera review
Hutchinson begins with a caveat: this is not an experiment to determine whether or not the iPhone 6 Plus camera is objectively better or worse than a $3,000+ DSLR with nearly $5,000 worth of additional gear, but rather a simple test to see if a casual consumer would notice the difference in everyday situations.
The first test was to see how the cameras fared indoors in the dark. Unsurprisingly, the photos taken with either camera aren’t very inspiring — without proper (or any) lighting, you’re just not going to get a decent photograph, no matter how expensive your equipment is. With moderate light, the quality began improving on the Canon, but the iPhone 6 Plus image was fuzzy with poorly defined details. The sharpness of the DSLR definitely stands out.
Once Hutchinson moved outdoors, the direct sunlight breathed new life into the iPhone. The iPhone 6 Plus took a “crisp and beautiful” picture of some flowers while the DSLR took plenty of fiddling just to get two decent photos, one of which was underexposed and the other of which was overexposed. Of course, this could be modified even further with a computer program, but this is about the needs of the average user.
The final test was when the iPhone finally fell flat on its face. In a controlled studio environment where Hutchinson takes product shots for Ars Technics, the image from the iPhone looks absolutely hideous in comparison to the DSLR image. There’s really no comparison.
Hutchinson concludes that “under many conditions, a smartphone that costs a few hundred dollars is mostly as good as a DSLR that costs eight-to-ten times as much.” Unless you need a top-of-the-line camera for work or as a means to take up a new hobby, your smartphone should serve you well.
Check out the full article for all the photo comparisons and more on the differences between the 5D Mark III and the iPhone 6 Plus.

Foxconn is in serious iPhone 6 ‘Bendgate’ denial, says Apple’s competitors are to blame

After some users discovered the iPhone 6 Plus bends when held in pockets in a certain manner, the phenomenon quickly turned into a PR problem for Apple, as #Bend gate videos went viral on YouTube, showing that the phone can be easily bent if enough force is applied in a certain way. Apple has largely refuted those claims by explaining its extensive iPhone torture testing, and saying replacements may be in order for affected customers. Apple’s claims were then backed up by a similar torture tests from Consumers Reports. Now even Foxconn, which makes the iPhone 6 Plus for Apple, has come out in denial of Bend gate with a wild conspiracy theory-type claim.
FROM EARLIER: The man who broke ‘Bendgate’ gives the same treatment to the Galaxy Note 4
Speaking to reporters, Foxconn CEO Terry Gou said that competitors are to blame for Bendgate, as Macworld U.K. reports.
“How can a phone bend? This was all caused by distortions from competitors. Don’t blindly listen to it,” Gou said on Tuesday. “Hands are made to shake hands, not for bending,” he added.
Yes, it does take a certain kind of pressure to bend the phone and it only happens in a certain position. And yes, the whole #Bendgate thing has been exaggerated. But you can’t deny the iPhone 6 can bend as Gou does, just as you can’t tell affected users that their pants preferences are to blame.
Also, competitors are obviously not to blame for all the bending, as many other devices have been similarly bent in other videos. Not to mention all those Instagaram images showing accidentally bent iPhone 6 units out in the wild.

These are the biggest differences between Apple fans and Microsoft fans

There are plenty of classic rivalries in the world of technology, but none run quite as deep as the one between Apple and Microsoft. Perhaps even more contentious than the ongoing battle of these two giants is the scrabble among their fans, constantly bickering back and forth about which company builds better products.
In order to get a better idea of exactly who comprises the fan base of each company,Business Insider enlisted the help of crowd sourced ranking site Ranker to find out how the two groups differ from one another. Ranker put together a fascinating infographic, using over 20 million data correlations it has gathered based on consumer opinions regarding the best brands, best companies or best laptops on the market.
The results might surprise you:
Apple Fans vs Microsoft Fans
There are a few obvious picks on here, including the disdain for Samsung from the Apple crowd, but interestingly, Microsoft fans appear to be far more interested in technology brands than Apple fans. Apple fans instead prefer expensive cars and expensive lattes. Apple fans are also apparently convinced that Microsoft is an evil company, while the Microsoft faithful are more worried about torrents on The Pirate Bay.
These results are decidedly unscientific, but it’s one more thing for Apple fans and Microsoft fans to disagree on.
